Pigroast_vom_1Kerry Smith and Sam Wingrove volunteered at the Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House at Johns Hopkins for the first time this past July. Along with a few colleagues from IMRE, they hosted a great dinner for families staying in the house. They enjoyed the visit so much that they wanted to continue to support the family supper program, and immediately scheduled another one.

When they came back to serve a second meal, we were blown away by their efforts! Kerry and Sam recruited family and friends to host the first-ever pig roast at the Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House. Sam’s parents, Nick and Joan, arrived bright and early on a Sunday morning to set up the smoker box on the outside patio. Everyone else arrived later in the morning and worked hard to set up an elaborate spread for lunch, including kabobs, macaroni and cheese, hamburgers and hot dogs, baked beans, and all the fixings! Appetizers were set out in time for kickoff for the 1pm football game that day, and everyone enjoyed a delicious feast shortly after.

Throughout the morning and afternoon, the volunteer group spent time with Believe In Tomorrow families outside in the perfect weather, as well as inside during the game. They made sure that all our families were enjoying themselves, making it much more than just a volunteer-led meal.

Not only did the group provide an amazing feast, but they also set up corn hole, outdoor bowling, and brought supplies for pumpkin decorating for all the kids. When everyone had just about reached their limit, the volunteers brought out yet another surprise – homemade local ice cream from Prigel Family Creamery!

Pigroast_vom_2Not only did this amazing volunteer group leave leftovers to feed our families for days, but they also went above and beyond by donating a dozen frozen meals to be stored and used for future family meals, something our families will really appreciate!

A great big thank you to Kerry, Sam, the staff at IMRE, and all their family and friends who helped make our first-ever pig roast such an amazing success! The Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House is honored to have the support of such thoughtful and gracious volunteers. Thank you for your time with us, and we can’t wait to see what you’ll think of for the next volunteer day!
