Margo at the Children's House

The Lane Company

Volunteer of the Month

March 2011

Debbie Walsh at Pinnacle FallsMargo Huffman is planning a birthday party. She has all the details laid out – the venue, guest list, a DJ and a band, menu items, colorful decorations, and a unique theme. But this is not your average teenager’s party: to celebrate her 15th birthday, Margo is throwing a fundraiser for Believe In Tomorrow!  Hoping to raise $500, she is asking each of her friends to make a donation in place of gifts, plans to decorate everything in the foundation’s orange and yellow colors, and has even found a venue that will donate the party space. Now this is one truly dedicated Believe In Tomorrow volunteer!

Margo began volunteering for Believe In Tomorrow just two years ago by selling handmade earrings and using the proceeds to purchase beach toys for the Believe In Tomorrow House by the Sea. She regularly spends time at the Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House at Johns Hopkins doing just about everything – cleaning, crafts and activities, jewelry making, pumpkin painting, cooking, and baking cookies for holidays. She also volunteered at the 28th Annual Benefit and Auction last November and recently hosted her first dinner for families at the Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House. With plans to become a pediatric oncologist, she loves simply playing and bonding with the children and putting a smile on their faces.

Margo first experienced the thrill of volunteerism at age two, when she was pulled in a wagon by her parents to complete the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Though she might not remember that day, she has since spent countless hours making a difference in others’ lives with her gentle kindness and compassion. Margo is a dedicated volunteer in every sense – she volunteers for many organizations and is a two-time recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Her beauty pageant platform, Margo’s M.O.D.E.L.S (Making an Ongoing Difference in Every Life through Service), emphasizes the importance of community service.

It is hard for many to imagine that someone so young has accomplished so many great achievements! Oh, and did we mention that she is a straight A student at Winters Mill High School, serves as her class president, and is ranked first in her class? Believe In Tomorrow is truly lucky to have someone with such big a heart who works so hard to put a smile on a child’s face.

Happy 15th Birthday, Margo, and thank you for all that you do!
