Volunteer of the Month
June 2012
GE Aviation is a world-leading provider and manufacturer of commercial and military jet engines, but a few local employees took a break from the world of flying machines for a day to give back. A group of 20 volunteers recently jetted down to the Believe In Tomorrow House at St. Casimir to help out, though the projects were slightly smaller than building a jet engine.
Jamie Baker, the coordinator for the group, discovered Believe In Tomorrow while searching for a way that the local GE Aviation chapter could get involved in the community. A survivor of leukemia herself, she knew that Believe In Tomorrow’s stand-alone housing facility for pediatric bone marrow transplant patients was the perfect opportunity. The company’s military focus also aligned them perfectly with Believe In Tomorrow’s Military Initiative.
Sean Morrison, the Family Care Manager for Believe In Tomorrow’s hospital housing program, reflected on the group’s volunteerism. “We are thrilled to have such energetic support from GE Aviation,” said Sean. “The volunteers selflessly worked to beautify the Believe In Tomorrow House at St. Casimir and create a more hospitable environment for our families. Our first volunteer event with GE Aviation was a tremendous success and I look forward to working with them in the future.”
The GE Aviation plant in Middle River, Maryland, employs hundreds of skilled tradesmen who were eager to lend their skills and services at the Believe In Tomorrow House at St. Casimir. Over the course of just a few hours, the group performed electrical work, improved plumbing, helped fix and repair a few leaks, painted both interior and exterior parts of the building, stained the lower level handicapped ramp, and provided and planted beautiful flowers in the window boxes below each apartment window.
“We had a great day,” said Jamie. “Everyone had a lot of fun and felt they really made something out of their day for a very worthy cause. We look forward to continuing our relationship with the Believe In Tomorrow Children’s Foundation and we’re excited to see what else we can make happen, together!”
