Volunteer of the Month
January 2012
Stephen Decatur High School in Berlin, MD, has been a crucial part of our volunteer team at the Believe In Tomorrow House By The Sea for the past 11 years. A high school focused on volunteerism, they have contributed their time and talents to Believe In Tomorrow in a multitude of ways.
The high school has volunteer program called “Stephen Decatur Connections” where students can sign up to volunteer and gain more student service learning hours. Students frequently volunteer at Believe In Tomorrow’s beach respite facilities to help check in families for their respites, set up welcome baskets, and help with barbeques.
The National Honor Society of Stephen Decatur High School raised $500 for Believe In Tomorrow and presented the check on December 30, 2011. They even made it onto the local news website, The Dispatch – check out the story here. Their efforts go beyond monetary; in September, more than 30 students helped at the Second Annual Beach Respite 5k in Fenwick Island, DE. Students helped with set up, registration, water stops, and food service; all with smiling faces!
For the past eleven years, the Steven Decatur High School Show Choir and Concert Choir have hosted the annual Christmas Under the Stars event in Ocean City, MD. In addition to singing and presenting a festive Christmas program, choir members served guests a delicious dinner, provided by the Golf Club. Wayne Littleton, the Believe In Tomorrow beach respite program coordinator, says that the Stephen Decatur students are terrific! “Stephen Decatur does such a wonderful job at getting the students involved.”
Thank you to all of the students from Stephen Decatur High School who have dedicated their time to Believe In Tomorrow. Even the smallest efforts make a big difference in the lives of critically ill children and their families.
