The Believe In Tomorrow National Children's Foundation developed the concept for the first pediatric respite facilities in the United States, which have grown to serve thousands of critically ill children and their families. Respite Housing provides these families with the opportunity to escape from the stressful routine of medical treatments. Often this experience is the first time that many families have to enjoy one another away from the tensions and anxieties of the medical world. By relaxing in a place far from the routine of hospital visits, free of charge, families are able to renew themselves mentally and physically, and spend quality time together while enjoying a wide range of activities.
“Rather than a trip catering only to (our son), our week at the House by the Sea constituted a true family vacation. We relaxed, bonded, played, laughed and made wonderful memories together. The family still laughs when we discuss some of the things we did.”
Realizing the tremendous need for families battling life-threatening illness to relax and renew their spirits, Believe In Tomorrow built the Believe In Tomorrow House By The Sea, which opened its doors in June of 2000. The beautifully decorated, two-level, six-unit condominium is located steps from the Atlantic Ocean in Maryland. Each unit features at least two bedrooms, one full bath, kitchen, dining and living room areas.
The local community embraces the beach respite program, spearheading several volunteer efforts. Volunteers offer support in a number of ways, including: welcoming the families, soliciting donations and planning fundraising events. Each week a barbeque is held on the deck of the Believe In Tomorrow House By The Sea for families staying all three beach facilities. This supportive program allows families who are experiencing similar circumstances the opportunity to meet and form friendships.
