Al-of-all-trades: Tour Guide, Ticket-seller, Mailman, Ambassador
By Melinda Weidman The first thing Al Lehman does when he gets to the Believe In Tomorrow Children’s House: he suits up in his Believe In Tomorrow polo shirt and hat. For most of the 14 years since Al became a volunteer for the organization, he has driven families around town to see the sites of Charm City. People know Al as the Baltimore tour guide. In his early years as a volunteer he always made a point to stop at Camden Yards, where he once worked as a guide. Al and his wife Marilyn have been known to introduce families to Baltimore’s Little Italy neighborhood, treating them to a night of Italian cuisine and friendship. Even today Al constantly looks for the next place to lend a hand; he once took a mom’s grocery list to the store and shopped for her so that she could stay home and care for her child. Some families only need to travel as far as the mailbox to feel the positive impact of Al. He regularly deposits little gifts -- First Aid kits, tote bags, coin purses – for families there. These surprises often come in handy during a stay at The Children’s House. In addition to his weekly shift at The Children’s House, Al puts in several hours at Believe In Tomorrow special events. He is a regular at Port to Fort, the Benefit & Auction, and numerous annual golf tournaments. Al is a great salesman and has been named the Raffle Ticket Seller Extraordinaire by Believe In Tomorrow staff. Al also acts as an ambassador to Believe In Tomorrow, attending workplace giving campaigns at various locations throughout Maryland. He is a fantastic speaker and has a wonderful ability to motivate and excite the community about Believe In Tomorrow’s programs. With Believe In Tomorrow families in mind, Al and Marilyn established the Ronnie Lehman Fund in honor of their son. The fund provides Children’s House families with tickets to local attractions and events, giving them an opportunity to take a break from the stress of hospital visits. On behalf of the families and staff of Believe In Tomorrow, thank you Al for all that you do. You are a living example of the Believe In Tomorrow Way! |
